Lompoc police investigating deadly shooting
LOMPOC, Calif. – The Lompoc Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a 34-year-old man dead Monday afternoon.
According to Lompoc police, the shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. near a home on South 3rd Street between Mango and Hickory Avenue.
The shooting prompted the lockdown of Hapgood Elementary, a few blocks away.
A neighbor said she didn't think it had anything to do with the school, but to protect the children she thought it was in their best interest to go on lockdown.
The same resident said she heard the sirens and police.
She said it was not something she normally sees or hears in this part of Lompoc..
About 3 hours after the fatal shooting, several Lompoc Police units and a Sheriff's SUV converged on the location with guns drawn and a K9, but they did not take anyone into custody.
After they left, a small fire truck arrived and officers in unmarked cars parked inside the crime scene tape.
They seemed to be looking for evidence.
They did not send out alerts or warn people about a gunman on the run.
They took down the crime scene tape blocking off the area around 9:30 p.m.
By late Monday night police had not reported making an arrest and they have not identified the victim or the suspect in the shooting.
They did ask anyone with information to contact the police.
