Enterovirus Strikes Ventura County Child

Ventura County Public Health Officer Dr. Robert Levin confirmed a local case of the unexplained respiratory Enterovirus-D68.

Dr. Levin said the child recovered at a hospital this month.

He credited a clinician with recognizing the severity and sending samples to be tested.

Levin said more local cases are likely.

He is warning parents not to send their kids to school or day care when they are not feeling well.

Symptoms are similar to the flu.

There is no vaccine or cure for the EV-68, but Levin recommends getting children vaccinated for the flu to protect them during flu season.

The South Oxnard Public Health Clinic won’t have the vaccine until the end of the month.
