Harvest Moon Is Also Supermoon
The moon looked fuller than usual Monday night. Astrologers call it a “supermoon.” It also happens to be the fall’s harvest moon.
It is not an astronomy term, but scientists recognize it as a time when the moon makes its closest approach to Earth.
It is a coincidence that the full or new moon happens at the same time.
It is not rare, scientists say there will be six supermoons next year, with the first one happening in late January.
Westmont College in Montecito has an observatory, but this supermoon can be easily viewed with the naked eye.
