Goleta Beach Cleans Up After Another Wave Surge
Goleta Beach has gone through another clean up after mounds of kelp and seaweed, carved up from the ocean, piled up on the popular coast.
Ranger Dave Calamar was using a skip loader to,”just pushing everything back in the ocean.”
Calamar has been on the front edge of storms here for over 30 years.
Rarely has he seen anything like he saw this week, during the summer season.
Nearby the Beachside Bar-Cafe , damaged in a violent spring storm, was spared this time around.
One of the volleyball courts came apart, however, and a pole was ripped from the sand.
Overall Goleta Beach again has a different look.
One resident said however he would like to see more sand walls and other protections.
“I have seen waves come when the winds blow off Ventura and the waves hit the planks over there,” said Amos Barajas. “For us in Central California, protected by the islands, before they started putting in debris dams this sand used to go way out there to that first restroom out there. Here there was a berm. You couldn’t even see Goleta.”
Now the sands of time are in motion again to replenish the beach before the next storm arrives.
