Cal Poly Engineering Students Helping Local Families in Need

Cal Poly’s industrial engineering students are spending their weekend on a home project they say is much more than a class project.

Each year students Cal Poly Industrial engineering and manufacturing graduate students along with volunteers find a family in need of a home renovation project.

Graduate student and project director Christina Boeryd said “Our client this year is a 34-year-old man who lives with his godparents. He was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy and really needs a track system put into his room.”

Boeryd said the students are also renovating the rest of the home to make sure their client and his godparents live comfortably.

This year students are renovating two homes; One in Nipomo and one in Grover Beach.

Byron Hoefer, a graduate student and project manager, said “It is humbling.” Hoefer said “We don’t do this everyday, especially when you’re in college; you don’t work with people in need everyday.”

The big reveal is on Sunday.
