Parents at Santa Maria High School want change
Some Santa Maria High School parents are concerned about their children’s education, so they have come up with suggestions and gave them to district officials.
“They’re interested in participating in the educational process for their students and we are listening and working with them on all of these issues,” said Assistant Superintendent John Davis.
Davis said some great suggestions have been given. Getting parents more involved with decision-making is one idea that they want to be put into practice. “All of the constituent groups need to come together and kind of agree that it is a good thing and we’ve had some issues with getting consensus agreement on that,” said Davis.
On Saturday, members of the Parents Community Involvement Committee publicly called for changes from the school. Its main concerns are how student classes are scheduled and the amount of classes for more advanced students.
The way it works now, students take only three classes in the fall and then three different classes in the spring. “What happens is they don’t have their core subjects all year long, they only have them for a semester. and, when they have to take the test at the end of the year that measures how much they have grown its hard to show improvement,” said retired educator Helen Galvan.
Suggestions for schedule changes have already been turned down by the school’s teacher’s union. Newschannel 3 has learned it is because of contract concerns.
