Santa Maria slaying happened yards from school

The 10 suspects accused of being involved in the death of 28-year-old Anthony Ibarra were in court Wednesday. Their arraignment was continued until April 18.

Newschannel 3 has learned that Cary Calvin Oakley Elementary School is less than a block from where police said Ibarra was tortured and killed.

“A lot of the kids are walking home with their brothers or sisters, some of their parents, grandparents. You can see they’re scared, there’s a lot more families are coming with their children,” said a concerned neighbor.

People who live very close to the home at 1142 W. Donovan Rd. said they are still afraid to go on camera in fear of retaliation.

“We thought there was someone moving in there. But then later on the police said that no, nobody was supposed to be in that house. So, it was kind of scary thinking, you know I’ve seen the U-Haul that was involved,” said one person who lives near the crime scene.

Police have arrested 10 people in connection to this case after Ibarra’s body was found in the back of a moving truck in Orcutt — eight of whom could face the death penalty if convicted.

The other two are charged with accessory to murder after the crime was committed.

People we spoke to say they have seen all of them at the home.

“The more people that come on, the more people we recognize and the more people that we know we’ve seen around here and especially one of them only being 19 and that’s younger than me,” said a resident who lives near the home on Donovan Rd.
