Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. on Inauguration Day

Monday’s holiday honors civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – the same day our nation celebrates the first black president to his second term. Dr. King would have turned 84 years old last week; today is the national holiday in his memory. President Barack Obama took his public oath of office for a second term Monday morning, for the second time in as many days, and used a bible that once belonged to King. The official ceremony was conducted Sunday indoors; Monday’s ceremony was the public version.A local rally honoring the civil rights leader was held at 9 a-m at De La Guerra Plaza in Santa Barbara, followed by a march up to the Arlington Theater and a live program, starting at 11 a-m.In Oxnard, the 27th annual MLK Jr. Day includes a Freedom March from Plaza Park and the Birthday Celebration Program at the Performing Arts Center from 9 – 11 a-m. Tickets are $7.
