Tenants’ Rights
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California landlords won’t be able to require their tenants to pay their rent online under a bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. The governor announced Friday that he has signed SB1055 by Torrance Sen. Ted Lieu, a Democrat. The bill protects tenants who want to make rental payments by check or money order.Lieu says he learned of a property management group that notified residents in a 300-unit complex that it was converting to online-only rent payments. One fixed-income senior in Torrance said she received an eviction notice even though she has never been late with a payment.Lieu says his bill ensures that the elderly, disabled and poor will have more than one option to pay rent.
