Final Section of Breakwater Wall Comes Down
Santa Barbara’s scenic breakwater wall is closed off while work takes place to replace the final section of a $1.9 million dollar project. Once finished, there will be not only a new walkway, but a higher wall.”It’s deteriorated and it’s time to replace it,” said Waterfront Facilities Manager Karl Treiberg. “The wall itself is going to be a little bit higher mainly to meet some building code requirements but that limited level of increased protection will certainly help.”Some areas of the breakwater were built in the late 40’s and some upgrades were done in the 1970’s.Over the years harsh winter storms have pounded the concrete, and some cracks have appeared.Besides being a scenic walk for some residents, the breakwater protects the 1100 commercial and private boats in the harbor.KEY News Senior Reporter John Palminteri has the story.
