Cyclone Chido kills several in French territory of Mayotte before heading for Africa’s east coast

MORONI, Comoros (AP) — Officials say the French territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean has suffered extensive damage from Cyclone Chido. They say several people have died. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau says “We’re afraid the toll will be high” following an emergency meeting in Paris. France’s new Prime Minister François Bayrou said public facilities have been “severely damaged or destroyed” including at the prefecture, the hospital and the airport. Other countries in mainland Africa are bracing as it roars toward the east coast of the continent. The nation of Comoros north of Mayotte also was battered by Chido as it heads toward Africa.
