Port Hueneme commissions mural celebrating its 75th Anniversary
PORT HUENEME, Calif. – The City of Port Hueneme is calling all artists to create a new mural at the Ray D. Prueter Library.
"The focus of the project to me is to help create a welcoming and vitamin space for the residence of Port Hueneme … Art is something that can help bring people together the way that the library brings people together," said librarian Timothy Furgal of the Ventura County Library.
This project will be a collaborative effort between the City, the Port, the Ventura County Library, and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center nonprofit.
"Art can really express who the people are of the community and people come together around our specifically murals, because they see themselves in those murals," said consultant Denise Sindelar of the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.
"I love murals I’ve seen murals and other communities, and I thought why not bring a mural program to the Port Hueneme," said council member Laura Hernandez of the City of Port Hueneme.
The mural is meant to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the City of Port Hueneme.
The art work will also launch the City’s public arts initiatives.
City organizers said any regional artist can apply for this pilot project at the library.
"It's all fee based funding from the port it’s not public funds it’s not taxpayer money. This is money that Port contributes as part of the city community benefit fund," said Hernandez.
City leaders said they hope this mural will be the first step toward building a public art program for the City of Port Hueneme.
Applications are due by email or online submission by Dec. 31, 2023.
