Chickens can be pets in Lompoc
Don’t get too egg-cited, but the City of Lompoc will now allow chickens to be pets.
The City Council voted 4-1 in favor of an ordinance that would permit chickens to be pets in households.
The ordinance will amend the municipal code to allow a household to keep and raise an animal when not done for sale. In addition to chickens, the ordinance also allows birds, ducks, and rabbits.
Turkeys and peacocks did not make the final cut.
The allowed-animals must be kept in a minimum lot size of 5,000 square feet. A cap of 6 animals has been written into the ordinance.
Lompoc City staff are finalizing the environmental documentation for this code amendment and still requires a final reading before it goes into effect.
