UCSB students host Indigenous People’s Day celebration
UCSB students and families celebrated Indigenous People’s Day with a dinner at the community center in Isla Visit.
Children colored pictures commemorating the culture and history of the day.
The day began as an counter-celebration to the Federal Columbus Day holiday. Organizers want people to know that the Italian navigator Christopher Columbus had a violent history colonizing indigenous people he called Indians.
Indigenous People’s Day began in South Dakota in 1989 and was soon commemorated in Berkley, California,
Students said they hope to see it become an annual event in every community.
