Rapper Super Duper Kyle visits Ventura High School with anti-bullying message

Students at Ventura High School received a special visit on Friday by a local rap star. The visit was part of a senior orientation program put on by AXE to help kick off National Bullying Prevention month.

Local rap star Kyle Harvey, known to his fans as Super Duper Kyle, is giving back by giving kids hope, and courage.

“I wanted to basically come and share my story,” said Harvey.

Kyle is visiting different high schools to take on issues like bullying, and toxic masculinity. All issues the rapper dealt with.

“I struggled with similar issues of not being the stereotype of what a man is supposed to be. Being strong, being emotionless and hyper-aggressive, it’s not like guys can’t be that way, but it is toxic to try and fix everybody into that box and tell them there is only one way to be a guy,” said Harvey. “And you wonder why we have so many problems with men later on in their life –because their entire life they have been told the wrong things are manly.”

A few students came up to recite poems about the issue.

“I was blind to the fact that guys and girls force themselves into boxes, and behind mask’s day in and day out,” said one student.

“That was really touching and I think all the kids did an amazing job at rallying behind them and saying we are against bullying,” said Harvey.

Kyle even sharing a moment when kids use to make fun of his dreams.

“I was trying to give people my mixtape and stuff, and I even got made fun of for that. So just some advice don’t let anyone discourage you on what you think is cool,” said Harvey.

Kyle graduated from Ventura High School back in 2011 and since then he has become a successful artist. His first world tour from his album “Light of Mine” is scheduled to kick off next week, but using visits like these to change lives is something that will remain one of his top priorities.

“That was always the mission because it was hard for me,” said Harvey. “It took so many incredible people from this community to teach me to use my voice that I knew one day I had to come back and did the same thing they did for me.”
