I have served on council and continue to work to make Hwy 246 safe for residents. I want to see our Avenue of the Flags projects move forward and want to see the Willemsen property vision completed.
What makes you qualified for the job?:
I have lived in Buellton 22 years and served as Postmaster for 14 years. I ran for Council in 2008 and have been Buellton’s elected Mayor for 4 years. Our residents make this town special and I am honored to serve them.
What are your two main priorities if you win?:
Top priority is Hwy 246. We’ve put up two crosswalks with flashing lights and it still doesn’t stop speeding cars. I’m working with SBCAG and Caltrans to change our Hwy from 6 to 4 lanes. Next priority is Avenue of the Flags. We’re completing our residents’ vision of a place for farmers’ markets and car shows. More development is coming and we need to proceed carefully to fully provide a downtown destination for our community to enjoy.
How will you interact with other governments?:
I am Buellton's representative on Santa Barbara County Association of Government, Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, Library Advisory Committee, and serve on LAFCO. I meet regularly with my City’s County Supervisor and nearby local officials.
What are your plans to help overcome COVID-19?:
It’s hard as a City. We follow mandates from the State and County. We’ve coordinated with our busy Chamber of Commerce to find any state or federal grants or loans for small businesses. Our Planning Department has been working with dining establishments to extend outdoor dining. Perhaps now that we’re in the “red” category our businesses will do better. Residents have started our own campaign to support and shop at local business. We also changed up some local events. Our big Eggstravaganza became an Easter egg hunt on residents’ front lawns with an Easter car parade. Our annual City BBQ was cancelled but our City hand-delivered a dessert to every resident to mark the date. We’re planning a “reverse” trick or treat and have a costumed volunteer deliver a candy bag to residents. We’re trying to keep spirits up! Our Senior Center has sprung into action and are feeding not only our seniors during this trying time but anyone who is hungry throughout our Valley. We’ve also got a Blessing Box up that locals keep full for those who are having a hard time.
Which two issues are most important to you?:
Keeping Buellton a special place. I want residents to feel safe in this wonderful town and know that their voice matters. Financial stability and careful growth are also very important. I feel so lucky to live here and want everyone in this town to feel the same way!
