California Highway Patrol officers begin maximum enforcement for Labor Day weekend

California highway Patrol officers are joining forces with five other western states to keep the roads safe during this Labor Day weekend.

Their slogan: “No safe place for impaired drivers.”

“Traffic will be increased throughout the state so because of that we will have a maximum enforcement period and that will be throughout this weekend,” said Kevin McCool, an officer with the California Highway Patrol in Buelton.

Officers call it “maximum enforcement.”

This will be in effect on highways, unincorporated areas and even in cities.

McCool said some of the biggest enforcement items CHP will be looking for include driving under the influence and speeding.

“We are seeing an uptick in distracted drivers so that’s something we will be paying attention to, making sure drivers are not on their cellphones which can be just as deadly as driving under the influence,” McCool said.

But that’s not all.

Officers are looking for anything that jeopardizes safety.

While many people think of Labor Day as the last weekend of summer and plan special trips, McCool reminds all drivers to slow down, don’t drive distracted and have a designated sober driver.
