Hair bundles a mystery on the Santa Barbara Mesa
Some mysterious bundles of hair are showing up on the Santa Barbara Mesa and many residents want to know what it all means.
They have been found mainly in center divider areas on Carrillo Hill, Meigs Rd., and Cliff Drive.
“Is it somebody’s hair?” asked resident Jenifer Eggersten when she was shown it at Shoreline Park.
In her quick response to seeing it up close, she said, “that is so creepy.”
One guy gave it a sniff and still wasn’t sure what he had.
Chris Scattini said, “so I guess we have a mystery on the Mesa.”
“I can’t even tell. It could be someone’s hair. It could be an animal’s hair it could be, I don’t know what animal has this long of hair,” he said.
Jennifer Eggertsen said, “could it be ….it doesn’t look like horse hair.”
Scattini said, “it’s thick roots and it could be a horse’s tail.”
Martha Aubin said, “it looks like horse hair, no it doesn’t. It is softer than horse hair.”
Phil Rogers said, ” I would have to say it is animal hair but what animal has hair that long?”
We reached out to cosmetology workers and those who may have some insights into cultural traditions that involve these hair bundles, but there were no answers.
Many people were left baffled. One resident said she saw some people dropping or throwing smaller ones out of a car window recently, but those are not the ones out there now.
One person on the Mesa saw a resident-run into traffic this afternoon, grab one and disappear.
