Oxnard police arrest 16-year-old for murder

Police have arrested a 16-year-old teenage boy for the murder of 44-year-old Oxnard resident Juan Oscar Gutierrez that occurred on March 19, 2018.

The suspect has been identified as Abraham Luna of Oxnard. Luna was already in custody at Ventura County Juvenile Hall when he was notified of the murder charge on June 8.

The murder happened at about 12:55 p.m. in March 2018 in the north alley of 1001 West Gonzales Road. Officers found an injured Gutierrez lying in the alley. He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound but died the following day from his injuries.

It took investigators more than 2 months to collect enough evidence and information to identify 16-year-old Luna as the primary suspect in Gutierrez’s death.

Luna will remain in custody at the Ventura County Juvenile Hall and is not eligible for bail.

A motive for the killing has not been revealed.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding this homicide to contact Detective Steven Ramirez at 805-385-7760. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may call the Violent Crimes Hotline at 805-982-7070.
