Three-time cancer survivor set to graduate from Cabrillo High School
While hundreds of kids will walk across the stage at Cabrillo High School Thursday and receive their diplomas, one Lompoc family thought their graduate might not be alive to toss her cap into the air.
Cabrillo senior Haley Weir says she’s both happy and sad to graduate and given everything she’s been through, getting that diploma means that much more.
“There was a time where it was really bad and we weren’t sure if she would still be here,” said Amanda Brooks, Haley’s big sister.
It’s a commencement that even a cancer diagnosis couldn’t derail.
“Seeing her deal with her every day stresses and struggles in life and getting through those obstacles, that’s who she is as a person,” said Brooks.
Born with Down syndrome, Haley Weir also beat cancer three times.
The 17-year-old says she’s excited to achieve another milestone.
It’s a goal her family didn’t think their graduate would live to see.
“She’s been through so much in her little life and she does not let anything hold her back. It’s just a huge relief and just seeing her accomplish these little goals in life and especially this year being such a big year for her,” said Brooks.
Brooks says her sister’s positive attitude is the glue that holds their family together and was paramount in her survival.
“Her attitude of it all, just I think is what kept her alive and busy and focused on getting better and now she’s looking forward to these different things, she’s graduating, her birthday,” said Brooks.
Just four years apart, the two can’t help but get into a tussle on the couch, much to their mother’s amusement. Brooks is now taking on the role of protective big sister.
“She’s like I’m turning 18, I’m ready to party and I’m like you are not partying, what are you talking about,” says Brooks, holding back laughter.
After Haley gets that diploma, there will be plenty to celebrate.
“I’ve been through life and loves and I’ve been through a lot of times,” said Weir.
The ceremony will take place Cabrillo High School’s football field, Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Since signs and noisemakers are not allowed, Weir’s family says some extra cheers would mean a lot to Haley.
After the big day, the Cabrillo grad plans to take up cheerleading for Special Olympics and enrolling in a four-year adult life skills class at El Camino.
