Baby arrives at hospital with potentially life threatening injuries

Ventura police are trying to piece together a child abuse case that left a woman injured, and a baby with potentially life threatening injuries.

Police were called out to the intersection of Telephone Road and Portola Road after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting an assault on a 63-year-old male victim.

The victim told police he had reportedly witnessed a domestic dispute between the suspect, later identified as Ventura resident Enrique Cardona, 34, and a woman holding a baby. Cardona allegedly followed the 63-year-old witness and assaulted him.

Cardona and the woman with the baby were seen leaving the scene in a car together, according to police.

At 10 p.m. the unidentified woman and baby showed up at Ventura County Medical Center for medical treatment. According to police, the baby was in serious condition and was immediately taken to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. The baby suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

Cardona was found the next day and booked into jail for battery with serious bodily injury, witness intimidation, felony domestic violence and for being a post release offender.

The child abuse investigation is ongoing and Child and Family Services is assisting in the investigation. Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to contact Major Crimes Detectives at (805) 339-4488.
