Layers of mud coat a Pismo Beach school’s recess area

A muddy surprise Monday morning at Coastal Christian School, where the recess area is now almost unrecognizable after this weekend’s wet weather.

“Oh my heart was breaking because we had just got up to the campus a couple years ago,” says Shawn Pierce whose children go to the school.

“I got a text message just before 7 o’clock this morning alerting me that we had a problem on campus – I didn’t know what that problem was until I got here [and] this was not what I was expecting to see,” Dave Rehnberg, Head of School for Coastal Christian tells us.

Layers of mud by the tractor load, taking parents and teachers to come together to help clean it up.

“This is our school and we love it – and every family out here is representative of that so it’s really important for us,” Pierce says.

With more rain expected this week, the school’s focus has now shifted to putting sandbags in front of the classrooms in order to make sure the mud doesn’t go any further.

“We’ve had a couple of classes that we’ve had to move into other classrooms [because] the access was impeded by the mud. We [plan on analyzing] the current situation and from there, make a determination of the best way to keep it from happening again,” Rehnberg explains.

It’s not clear how long it will take for them to finish cleaning up this mud, but if you’d like to help out, click here to find out how to contact the school.
