Los Osos Valley Women Remembered Through Community Clean Up

The families of three Los Osos women killed last fall are honoring those they’ve lost by keeping a major stretch of road a little cleaner.

Friends and family members of Margay Edwards, Anna Marie Deis and Sabrina Hammerlund spent Sunday morning picking up litter along several miles of Los Osos Valley Road.

Edwards’ body was found in a Nevada desert on September 2015.

The following month, Anna Marie Deis was riding her bike on Los Osos Valley Road when she was struck and killed by a driver.

Six weeks later, Sabrina Hammerlund lost control of her vehicle on Highway 1, East of Morro Bay.

All three women grew up in Los Osos and knew each other.

“The thoughts of them are what’s keeping this clean,” said John Hammerlund, Sabrina’s father.

Hammerlund was joined by his wife and 3 year-old niece Ari to help clean Los Osos Valley Road.

For the dozens that came out to help with the cleaning efforts, they hope their work will remind drivers to be safer on the road as well as remind them to take life a little slower.

“Life’s just really short,” said Debbie Deis, Anna’s mother. “You cherish those moments that you have with family and friends and neighbors and don’t take them for granted.”
