Sheriff’s Office Concludes Isla Vista Shooting Investigation. Report Released.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has completed their investigation into the Isla Vista tragedy that occurred on May 23, 2014.

The Sheriff’s Office said the eight-month investigation found that Elliot Rodger acted alone in committing the horrific crimes.

” It was an extremely detailed investigation,”Sheriff Bill Brown told NewsChannel 3. He appeared on NewsChannel 3 Mid day as the report was about to be officially released.

The murderous rampage claimed six lives and injured at least 14 others before the suspect ultimately took his own life.

Now, a summary report is about to be released detailing important points of the investigation. “No doubt this will bring up painful memories of that day,” said Sheriff Bill Brown. You can find a copy of that report at the end of this article.

In his first live interview since the investigation concluded, Sheriff Brown spoke with our John Palminteri about the contents of the 65-page summary. “As a result of the fact that he committed suicide at the conclusion of the rampage, there is no need for further investigation,” said the Sheriff.

The summary of the investigation will describe what happened during the day of May 23rd and what preparations the suspect made to execute the crime. It will also provide background information on the suspect and his early life, and describe the type of injuries, fatal and non-fatal, that were sustained by the victims.

“There’s a message in the report that we’re hopeful we can take lessons learned from this tragedy and help shape some policy and help shape some training,” said Sheriff Brown. “This was a very difficult situation because the suspect was able to convince many people, for many years, that he was able to function normally.”

The suspect’s father, Peter Rodger, released a statement where he says he hasn’t read through the entire report but has nothing but respect for how investigators did their jobs and treated his family. He hopes the newly released findings by the Sheriff’s Office help avoid future tragedies.

Sheriff Brown also credited his deputies and UC police officers, “whose very quick and brave and resolute response that evening no doubt saved lives. Many additional lives. There literally could have been hundreds of people killed in this terrible tragedy.”

A summary of the investigation report is now available to the public here.
