San Marcos Wins Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic Over Dons

San Marcos used a fast start and just made it to the finish line as they held off rival Santa Barbara to capture the championship of the Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic in Carpinteria. The Royals led 22-8 after one quarter and 35-13 at the half. But the Dons made a furious fourth quarter rally and pulled within four points at 55-51 on a Matt Wagonhurst lay-up with 55 seconds left. But the Royals made their free throws down the stretch and won the title 60-54. Kevin Hempy, who was an all-tournament selection, scored a game-high 16 points for the Royals while tournament MVP Bryce Ridenour added 14. Wagonhurst and all-tournament selection Jack Baker scored 12 apiece for the Dons who made just three field goals in the entire first half.
