“Only the Brave” premieres with fundraiser in Buellton for fallen firefighter

Local hero Sean Misner is one of the Granite Mountain Hotshots portrayed in the film “Only the Brave.”

Misner was one of the 19 hotshots killed fighting the Yarnell fire in Arizona in June 2013.

Only the lookout survived.

The film starring local actor Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and others opens nationwide this week.

Misner’s parents reached out to the producers and the Parks Plaza Theater to get permission to hold a special premiere in Buellton on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.

Ron and Tammy Misner said the premiere will be free, but moviegoers will be asked to donate to another fallen firefighter’s family.

Los Padres Fire Chief Gary Helming died in a traffic accident on his way home from fighting the Railroad Fire in the Sierra National Forest in August.

Helming is survived by his wife, a young son and infant twins.

“My heart went out to his wife and what she is going through and knowing what my son’s wife went through with their baby and the support and I just want to be able to let them know that hey we are here for you we are fire family, ” said Tammy Misner.

She said Sean knew his wife was expecting before he died.

His son, also named Sean, just turned four.

There will also be a fundraiser at the Figueroa Brewing Company in Buellton before and after the movie.

Tammy Misner has yet to see the movie all the way through, but what she has seen is a positive portrayal of her patriotic, athletic son.

Sean’s father Ron will see the film for the third time on Thursday.

He said the film shows the “true spirit” of firefighters.

Actor Kenneth Miller portrays Sean Misner.

Miller wears a red, white and blue bandana in the movie just like Sean did when he fought fires.
