Abandoned Bicycles Tagged For Removal In Isla Vista

An effort is underway to clean-up abandoned bicycles near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The bikes have been locked up and left to rust and collect dust for months.

At least 50 bicycles are taking up space in bike racks in front of Isla Vista businesses.

Public Works crews tagged them on Tuesday with notifications that read, “Your bike is parked illegally.”

They will be impounded within 48 hours.

Santa Barbara County public engagement specialist Lael Wageneck said, “They clog up racks in front of businesses and we want to make sure the businesses are getting customers.”

If no one collects them within 90 days they will be auctioned off or given to charity.

Owners may retrieve their bicycles if they contact the Sheriff’s Office at 805-681-4179 and pay the appropriate impound fee.
