Jane Laut Gets 50 Years To Life For Murder Of Olympic Medalist Husband

Saturday will mark the 7th anniversary of the shooting death of Dave Laut.

Trial delays allowed Laut’s wife Jane to raise their adopted son until her conviction earlier this year.

The Olympic bronze medal shot putter’s wife Jane was sentenced to 50 years to life on Tuesday for the fatal shooting that occurred in the side yard of their Oxnard home the summer of 2009.

Like his father, Dave Laut worked at Hueneme High. He was a 52 year old Hueneme High School athletic director. He won the bronze in the last event, on the last day of the 1984 summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Jane Laut took the witness stand during her trial and refused to take a plea agreement that would have set her free in six years.

Her attorney Ron Bamieh called her lengthy sentence a, “miscarriage of justice.”

“The same people who but 18 months ago were comfortable with sentencing her to 6 years, who admitted she was a victim of domestic violence thereby justifying their position as to the six year offer, were in court today asking for 50 years to life,” said Bamieh.

He said the court rendered the penalty the law allows.

On Monday, a judge refused a motion for a new trial that Bamieh had hoped would allow testimony about battered women syndrome.

Dave Laut’s side of the family was not convinced she was abused and said so on a national television show, but Jane Laut’s relatives and friends tell a different story.

It may take 18 months for the appellant court to rule.

Bamieh said another law firm will be handling the case.
