Pismo Beach Works on Pier Renovation Plans

It’s a big attraction in the city of Pismo Beach, and one of the longest piers on California beaches, attracting hundreds of thousands of people every year. Now in the planning stages the city is set to spend millions this year on making sure the pier stays sturdy.

Rain or shine, you can see people packing the Pismo Beach pier every day, it’s a place where many say they have fond memories, but it’s also in need of some major repairs after a firm conducted a study on the pier last year.

This week, City staff moved to adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Shoreline Engineering, Inc. to provide professional engineering services for the rehabilitation work on the Pismo pier structure and seawall in the amount of $247,092.

The Pismo pier measures approximately 1,200 feet in overall length and varies in width from approximately 32 feet to more than 182 feet. The pier includes cantilevered fishing decks, four widened diamond popouts, and one tapered section.

Shoreline Engineering, Inc. was retained in 2015 by the City of Pismo Beach to perform a comprehensive structural inspection of the Pismo Beach Pier. It found the pier needs repair.

The City is willing to spend around $3.2 million on the project.

The staff expects the renovation to be in phases. The plans should be completed by August, and the bids for construction start in the fall.
