Camarillo Dentist Accused of Setting Competition Businesses on Fire

A Camarillo dentist is under arrest for arson. Tuesday afternoon Leopold Weinstein pleaded not guilty to the three counts of arson and three counts of attempted arson. He also asked his judge to reduce his $250,000 bail but his request was denied.

Camarillo dentist Leopold Weinstein is better known to his clients as Dr. Leo. He is accused of trying to start six fires at Camarillo dentist offices over the span of seven months.

Detectives said Weinstein tried to light the Rosewood Dental Group on fire four times. Only two of the attempts were successful, but even the successful arson attempts caused very minimal damage to the building.

“No, we never had to close, no one was ever in any danger, the building never actually caught on fire. It was business as usual,” said Rosewood dentist Dr. Packhman.

“We found flammable materials on the roof, and we were made aware that someone was outside the building trying to throw materials on the roof and trying to light them. Not the best arsonist in the world,” Said Rosewood dentist Dr. Sprague.

Detectives said the other dental office Weinstein targeted was Camarillo Dental Practice, a dental office located in the same complex as Weinstein’s.

Captain Aguilar with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said surveillance video and images provided investigators a positive identification and caught Weinstein in the act of setting fire to the building.

Detectives said Weinstein’s motives are not entirely clear, but he too is a dentist and it appears it was financially motivated.
