Folklórico dancers make final preparations at La Casa de la Raza ahead of Santa Barbara Fiesta

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The sound of stomping feet, swirling dresses and traditional music echoed through La Casa de la Raza as folklórico dancers put the finishing touches on months of preparation ahead of Old Spanish Days Fiesta.

Inside the historic community center, dancers rehearsed choreography, refined their footwork and made final adjustments to colorful traditional dresses they will wear during Fiesta celebrations throughout the week.

The dance group has spent months preparing traditional Mexican folklórico performances that showcase the music, costumes and cultural heritage of different regions of Mexico.

At La Casa de la Raza, preparations extend beyond the dance floor. Volunteers are also getting ready to welcome community members during one of Santa Barbara's most celebrated annual traditions, with organizers emphasizing that Fiesta is as much about preserving culture as it is about celebration.

Organizers say the rehearsals represent more than preparing for performances. They see them as an opportunity to pass cultural traditions to the next generation and ensure they continue for years to come.

"It was the sound of my feet hitting the ground that made me want to do it," said folklórico dancer Emmanuel Rangel. "I really liked the sound of the music as well. I like going with the rhythm. My siblings did it when they were little, and I'm Hispanic, so I want to embrace my culture."

Performers of all ages are scheduled to participate in Fiesta events throughout the week, including El Desfile Histórico, Noches de Ronda and performances at El Mercado, sharing generations of tradition with residents and visitors alike.
