Pop Tennis Becomes Next Big Hit
There’s an old sport rocking a new name. It’s known as pop tennis.
The sport has actually been around for over 100 years. It used to be called paddle tennis, but with a new name the hope is pop tennis can become a national and international sport.
“We’ve just started here in California to rebrand paddle tennis and call it pop tennis,” said Ken Linder, president of Pop Tennis Association.
The court is smaller, the net is lower and the rackets are different than regular tennis, but the rules are the same, except you serve underhand.
Venice Beach is the mecca of pop tennis, but it’s slowly growing up the Central Coast. In 2012 Soule Park in Ojai opened the first pop tennis courts in Ventura County.
The courts are now home to an annual pop tennis tournament where players from as far as Grover Beach come every summer.
