‘A Night with Janis Joplin’ opens at The New Vic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) The Ensemble Theatre Company is welcoming Janis Joplin fans to The New Vic in Santa Barbara, but you don't have to know the late artist's work to enjoy the show.

'A Night with Janis Joplin' stars Tony award nominee Mary Bridget Davies.

Davies reprises her role with a cast that includes Sadé Ayodele, Jenna Gillespie Byrd, Melissa Musique, and Sha'leah Nikole as Joplinaires.

They play multiple roles portraying the women who inspired Joplin, including Odette, Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith and Nina Simone.

Davies co-directs the show with award-winning director, actor and educator Brian McDonald.

McDonald watched audience members wowed by all their voices during previews.

Bryd is an Oxnard native and there are others locals in the production including guitarist Maitland Ward.

The Santa Barbara premier runs almost daily through April 26.
