Clash of the Political Parties: Cal Poly Hosts High-Profile Conservative Tour and Progressive Resource Fair

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - Cal Poly is hosting two concurrent political events this evening, reflecting contrasting ideological viewpoints among the student body.

The national conservative organization Turning Point USA is holding a campus speaking event dubbed “America: Love It Or Leave It,” while the Cal Poly Democratic Club is hosting a counter resource fair at the University Union.

The simultaneous gatherings showcase heightened student political involvement on campus.

Turning Point USA's event marks a stop on its autumn national tour, while the student-led resource fair aims to offer an alternative atmosphere for attendees on the Central Coast campus.

Turning Point USA’s campus gathering features guest speakers including former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, athlete and anti-trans activist Riley Gaines and right-leaning pundits Nick Shirley and Will Witt.

Event advertisements state the tour intends to protect free speech, contest existing campus viewpoints and host a live audience question-and-answer segment where disagreeing students are encouraged to ask questions first.

The Cal Poly Democratic Club, a student political organization, is hosting its “Community Over Division Resource Fair” from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the University Union.

In statements prior to the event, Cal Poly Democratic Club organizers characterized national right-wing group appearances as “divisive political activism” and designed the fair to provide an environment focused on diversity, equity and solidarity.

The resource fair includes participation from local organizations, student groups and community members.

University administrators confirmed they are assessing public safety, personnel requirements and security logistics for both gatherings. Following a September incident on campus where a conservative display was knocked over, administration officials are relying on routine safety protocols to ensure both programs occur peacefully while maintaining free speech rights.

Both events are expected to draw attendees from across the Central Coast area.
