Oxnard voters choose new council member
Bert Perello won Oxnard’s special election Tuesday to become a City Council member.
Perello will finish the term left behind by Tim Flynn. Flynn was a council member when he was elected mayor last November.
Perello is a familiar face in Oxnard. Although he was born in Santa Barbara, he has spent most of his 61 years in El Rio and Oxnard. His family ran a lemon ranch. He studied farming at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
For years he has been considered a thorn in the side of the City Council, questioning every move.
Ventura County election officers said only 11 percent of Oxnard’s registered voters turned out Tuesday.
They had 13 candidates to choose from.
