Talk to help chimpanzee sanctuary

A colleague of Jane Goodall paid a visit to Ventura this week.

Lilly Ajarova is touring the U.S. to raise funds for nearly 50 chimpanzees rescued from poachers.

They are living on an island sanctuary near Uganda. Donations will help pay for an electronic fence to protect them.

Their caregivers said the chimpanzees are charismatic and intelligent. Arjarova said her years of work with the chimps had made her understand herself more. She said share -98.7 percent of our DNA. The main difference between them and us is the vocal cords.

After a visit to the L.A. Zoo, Arajova will speak at the Church of the Foothills at 7 p.m. Thursday.
