Obama Proposes $500M Gun Violence Program

President Obama is calling on Congress to tighten gun laws in the United States.At a White House news conference, surrounded by victims of gun violence, Obama laid out his $500 million plan.”If there is even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there is even one life that can be saved then we’ve go an obligation to try,” Mr. Obama said.The proposed program includes a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 bullets. This ban will take congressional approval.To bypass congress the President also signed 23 executive orders: One for tougher penalties on people who lie on background checks, and another that makes it easier for the government to research gun violence.The National Rifle Association released this statement following President Obama’s announcement.“Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation. Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy.”NRA President David Keene says the organization will fight the President’s proposal.The Senate is expected to begin considering gun legislation in the coming weeks.>Click here to read more about President Obama’s gun violence plan.
