Goleta Intersection To Get Crosswalk Improvements

The plan to improve a deadly intersection is moving forward.

The Goleta City Council approved the design and plans for the intersection of Cathedral Oaks Road and Santa Marguerita Drive, and picked a construction company to do the work.

The project should begin the first week of January and take 15 working days to compete.

On Nov. 11 a 59-year-old woman pushing a toddler in a stroller was struck and killed while crossing the street.

Residents have been calling for improvements and Goleta has had plans to do it, but now it will be done.

The city put the project out to bid at the end of November. A company called DPM Construction out of Camarillo will do the job for $88,058, which is less than what the city estimated.

“The project includes rapid flashing beacons, curb extensions, pedestrian refuges. Basically enhancements to the crosswalk to reduce the crossing distance to make the pedestrian more visible to drivers and for pedestrians to be able to see drivers oncoming,” said Steve Wagner, the Goleta City public works director.

The project will also include an additional streetlight. Goleta and Southern California Edison will install it.
