Chance of showers for our weekend forecast

Overnight and morning low clouds, patchy fog, and drizzle will continue through the weekend for most coast and valley areas with light rain possible near the foothills.  Amounts expected to be small, just a couple hundredths of an inch. Some locations will not see much clearing until late afternoon hours, if at all. Afternoon temperatures will be slightly below normal through the weekend, primarily in the 60s.

Flat upper level ridging over California this afternoon will move out of the area Friday night and Saturday as an upper level low approaches from the northwest. The marine layer is forecast to deepen a bit more Friday night into Saturday morning with widespread low clouds and fog expected across the coast and valleys and up to the lower coastal slopes. Patchy drizzle will also affect much of the area with isolated measurable accumulations of one to two hundredths of an inch. The low clouds will slowly clear back toward the coast by Saturday afternoon, but continued strong onshore gradients will likely keep low clouds along much of the coastal plain. Temperatures will turn even cooler, falling into the 60s and well below normal.

A low will track down the coast Sunday. The moist layer combined with cyclonic flow aloft will bring drizzle and a slight chance of light rain to much of the area as well Saturday night into Sunday morning, with a few hundredths of an inch possible. The clouds should thin out toward the coast by Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will remain cool on Sunday.

The upper level low will continue to move slowly east Sunday night into Monday, with upper level ridging expected to build just off the coast by late Monday. The marine layer is expected to lower some but widespread night and morning low clouds and fog can still be expected for the coast, valleys and up to the lower coastal slopes. Patchy drizzle also cannot be ruled out. The low clouds should clear back toward the coast by afternoon, with mostly sunny skies for many inland sections.

Upper level ridging is expected next week which will help bring temperatures back near normal.
