Santa Maria police performing traffic enforcements as more drivers hit the road

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - As roads get busier, so are officers at the Santa Maria Police Department.

"So we’re out there doing traffic enforcement trying to reduce traffic collisions," said Sgt. Michael McGehee of the Santa Maria Police Department.

This is good news for drivers like Ailed Nunez who are a little frustrated, "There’s a lot of traffic and people are having to slow down and stop and it’s easy to get in an accident id you’re not paying attention especially because there’s a lot more people on the roads now," as well as Lauren Sulva, "I’ve been seeing a lot of road rage people driving way too fast ans obviously more people are on the roads."

Since Santa Barbara County entered the Orange Tier, more people are on the roads.

Mcgehee said the department has been conducting several traffic enforcements in response.

"We’re out there doing traffic enforcement stops trying to get people to get off their cell phones. You can only use hands-free, use a mount, use Siri," said McGehee.

During one of there traffic enforcement‘s Mcgehee said the department issued 200 citations and numerous traffic stops.

As more people continue to hit the road, Mcgehee urges drivers to slow down.

"Our goal is to keep people safe on the road. So please slow down leave room in front of you," said McGehee.

Officers say they’re also conducting DUI checkpoints and saturations in addition to traffic enforcements.
