SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Lauren Carandang broke a school record and had her sights set on another before her senior track and field season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In late February, Carandang set a new Pioneer Valley High School record in the triple jump with a CIF qualifying mark of 36 feet and two inches.
Carandang wanted to break her school's pole vault record of 9 feet, 6 inches, a mark she hit in practice but never in a meet.
She was a competitive gymnast for many years and Carandang feels some of those skills helped her in track and field which she did all four years at PV.
Carandang also competed in cross-country, wrestling and tennis for the Panthers.
She will attend UC San Diego in the fall and study biology.
