UCSB cruises past Cal Poly to win weekend series

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara baseball triumphed in a Blue-Green rivalry series for the first time in six years, winning 12-3 on Sunday to take three out of four games this weekend.

With the win, second-place UCSB moved closer to conference leader UC Irvine.

The Gauchos (29-12, 20-8 Big West) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Bryce Willits' three-run triple.

Jason Willow and former Cal Poly football player Broc Mortensen added two-run home runs in the middle innings. Christian Kirtley plated two more runs with a single in the sixth.

JD Callahan (3-2) worked seven innings allowing three runs to earn the win.

Matt Lopez had a two-run double for the Mustangs (20-20, 10-14), who fell to eighth in the Big West standings.

UCSB will host UC Irvine in a critical four-game series next weekend in a showdown of the Big West's top two teams.
