Padhal, Hayes named Round Table athletes of the week

ORCUTT, Calif. -- Class was out at several local high schools on Monday in observance of Lincoln's birthday, but the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table was held as usual.

During the hour-long luncheon at Giovanni's Pizza, Erynn Padhal and Gracen Hayes were each named athletes of the week.

Padhal was honored after helping lead the Orcutt Academy girls basketball team to a pair of victories.

"I feel like it's a step to your dream to become what you want to become," Padhal said. "It shows that you're working hard and you're being recognized for it, so it's a step getting to what you want to accomplish."

The two wins by the Spartans (9-0, 21-4) clinched the first ever league championship in program history.

"It's very cool, especially for our seniors because it is special to them," said Padhal. "They worked hard for their four years and they got what they worked for and we got for what we worked for and it's a dream come true for all of us."

On Tueday, Padhal scored 24 points on 11 for 13 shooting in a 53-38 victory over area rival St. Joseph.

Three days later, she scored 12 points in a 67-23 rout over Templeton.

For the week, the junior forward finished with 36 total points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.

Orcutt Academy will complete its regular season schedule with a Tuesday home game versus Santa Maria at Lakeview Junior High School.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Hayes was honored after winning the Channel League wrestling title in 145 pound weight class.

"I feel honored," said Hayes. because there's a lot could have won it."

The Lompoc junior finished the regular season undefeated and will next compete at the CIF-Southern Section Finals at Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga on Friday and Saturday.

"I'm going to work hard and go through each match one by one," said Hayes. "Hopefully go to state. I'm going to try to make it to Masters and then state."

Santa Maria, Righetti and Pioneer Valley were all off on Monday and were not in attendance at the luncheon.

Santa Ynez was also unable to attend.
