“Give Me Time”: Story of dedication to AIDS and LGBTQ causes from Ventura city councilmember Doug Halter

VENTURA, Calif. - Doug Halter is a Ventura resident, business owner and city councilmember. For some that would be enough to write a book about their life. But Doug Halter is much more than his current titles or roles. He's an advocate, local leader and survivor. Halter has been surviving for decades after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in the 1980's.

His story of thriving with AIDS is detailed in his new memoire "Give Me Time."

Doug Halter and his partner were shocked to learn that they had AIDS and only had a few months to live. Doug’s partner grew sick and passed away, but Doug miraculously got into the first successful trial of a drug that blocked AIDS complications – and he survived.

Forty years since the AIDS crisis rippled across the globe, more than 700,000 Americans has died. And 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV today, according to HIV.gov.

Halter's story about living with AIDS has shaped the person he is today. And he joined FOX11 Friday morning to talk about his experience writing the book and how the COVID-19 Pandemic paralleled the early days of the AIDS Pandemic.

He also talks about helping to revitalize downtown Ventura with his work in the non-profit sector an as a member of the Ventura city council.
