9-year-old child accidentally shoots himself in Oxnard

OXNARD, Calif. - A 9-year-old child was hospitalized after he accidentally shot himself in the hand Tuesday afternoon in Oxnard.

At around 11:30 a.m., Oxnard police officers responded to the 1200 block of South North Street. There they found the 9-year-old boy who was injured in the shooting. The child was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

In their investigation, they found that the handgun was located in the home and was easily accessible. The child thought it was a toy and played with it before accidentally shooting himself, detectives determined.

Police then served a warrant at the home and found a large amount cash, concentrated cannabis, Psilocybin Mushrooms, a semi-automatic “ghost” gun and a rifle.

Oxnard police investigators arrested and booked 17-year-old juvenile into the Ventura County Juvenile Facilities complex.

Police say the teen lived with his mother.

The teen was arrested and faces possible charges for child endangerment, unsafe storage of a gun, possession of an unregistered gun, possession for sales of concentrated cannabis and Psilocybin Mushrooms.
