Woman struck and killed by train in Ventura
VENTURA, Calif. - A woman was struck by a train in Ventura Saturday evening around 4:55 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ventura Police Department was notified by Amtrak dispatch that a pedestrian had been struck by an Amtrak train on the tracks west of Anacapa Street in Ventura.
The train conductor told police that the northbound train was travelling at about 50-55 miles per hour when they saw the victim lying intentionally on the tracks.
The conductor said they made all emergency attempts to stop the train, but they couldn't get the train to stop in time and it struck the woman.
While the train was delayed for about two hours, none of the 100 passengers on board were injured during the crash.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the woman lying next to the tracks. Police said once the identity of the victim has been confirmed, the coroner's office will notify her next of kin.
Amtrack police are working with Ventura police and City Fire to investigate the incident.
