SANTA MARIA, Calif.- Due to last week’s rainstorm, the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department are extending its decision to keep Los Flores Park closed.

One of the most popular places for outdoor recreation are the many city parks across Santa Maria.

"It’s important because not only does it bring our children together but I think it’s also good for us in general to go out more," said Juan Yanez a Santa Maria resident.

The Rec and Parks Department is keeping the popular park closed in order to ensure the public’s safety.

"We don’t want to put people out on the trails they’re extremely wet very slippery and slides on some of the major trails so we’re trying to get those repaired before we are allowed to public back in the park," said Alex Posada, Santa Maria Rec and Parks Department Director.

Park goers are among many in the community who didn’t expect such an intense rainstorm last week.

"It’s been here for as long as I’ve  been around. I think it’s very necessary for the environment actually appreciate it. I don’t think you’re ready for this kind of weather just you know the way that it came I saw unexpectedly, but I think it’s something that  we’ve been needing it for a while," said Juan Yanez.

The department says Grogan Park is also currently closed to the public due to safety concerns since last week’s rainstorm.

The department says the majority of parks throughout the city are currently open to the public.
