Man suffers hypothermia after becoming wedged under Goleta Beach Pier

GOLETA, Calif. - A man was treated for hypothermia after becoming stuck in the water under Goleta Beach Pier early Saturday morning.

Santa Barbara County Fire responded to the call just before 4 a.m. Upon arriving, they said they found a man in his 60s wedged between two wood pilings near the boat hoist located about three-quarters of the way out on the pier.

The man said he had been calling for help for several hours before being discovered by a couple of boats that had been dropping off workers from the offshore oil platforms.

County Fire sent out two water rescue boarders along with one personal watercraft.

The rescue boarders reached the man and were able to bring him down and back to shore within 20 minutes.

The man was then assessed by medics and transported by AMR ambulance to Cottage Hospital for the treatment of his hypothermia.

County Fire said it is unclear how the man became wedged under the pier in the first place.
