Santa Barbara Unified School District board passes gun safe storage resolution
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Santa Barbara Unified School District Board members unanimously passed a gun safe storage resolution after hearing from mothers.
Board President Laura Capps proposed the resolution and said she was moved by powerful comments.
One speaker said she has family in Sandy Hook where the gunman that targeted children had easy access to firearms that were not safely stored.
In an effort to save lives, Capps said the resolution instructs school staff to communicate with parents about the safe storage of firearms required by law.
She said the passage of the resolution is supported by the Parent Teacher Associations and Moms Demand Action and comes at a time when gun sales are up and more children are at home.
Many children in the area are going to school online and possibly experiencing what one educator called " Zoom fatigue."
Other schools across the country have passed similar resolutions but Capps said this is the first to pass locally.
"While the threat of school shootings have dropped, our children are actually facing a greater threat of gun violence: we have more guns and more kids together than ever before. Safe storage of firearms saves lives, and it's the law, " said Capps.
