Newly opened State Street allows more than dining on the sidewalk
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - It’s not everyday visitors can stand in the middle of State Street in Santa Barbara, and some people would like it to stay that way.
The street has become a promenade during Phase 2 of the COVID-19 pandemic prevention efforts.
On Memorial Day, Bands that lost gigs due to the pandemic played at a safe distances for tips.
Nearby people lined up for dinner.
Lines at Joe's Cafe spilled out onto the sidewalk, but people didn’t mind the wait.
These said they can buy a drink and drink in line.
Erin Dougherty joined friends at Joe's to celebrate her birthday which falls on Memorial Day this year.
"I'm actually celebrating my birthday week so we are waiting in line for Joe's. I absolutely love Joe's drinks. It's totally worth it, and I definitely want State Street to stay like this."
Employees are reminding customers to wear masks inside unless they are eating. It's part of a new rule in the city.
Brandon Bahre said, "Where a mask, that is like your ticket inside."
He has a loved one who is vulnerable and wants to make sure he doesn't get her sick.
"My sister got diagnosed with a disease that if she gets the virus she is basically gone, so I can't see her, so I have to be very careful with my health."
Many people concerned about people choosing not to wear masks are staying away.
